Caudill Seed Company® Issues Recall on Wegmans Organic Buttter Flavor Microwave Popcorn, Due to Undeclared Dairy Allergen

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Louisville, KY — March 18, 2009 — Caudill Seed Company, Inc. today is recalling Wegmans Organic Butter Flavor Microwave Popcorn because it may contain undeclared milk ingredients. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk ingredients run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.
This product was distributed to and sold by Wegmans retail stores in New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
The product is sold in a 10.5 oz. tan and orange square cardboard carton with a picture of popped popcorn on the front. This carton contains 3-3.5 oz. trifold brown microwavable bags wrapped in cellophane marked USDA organic popcorn. The product is labeled as Wegmans Organic Butter Flavor Microwave Popcorn with a UPC of 077890853917. There are four date codes being recalled. The recalled product’s date code is embossed on the end of the box and the first date code reads “A 06/05/09 or B 06/05/09.” The second date code reads ” A 05/27/09 or B 05/27/09.”
No complaints illnesses have been reported to date.
The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the product containing milk ingredients was incorrectly packaged in cartons that did not reveal the presence of milk ingredients. Subsequent investigations indicate the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the producer’s packaging processes.
Consumers who have purchased the product with a date code of “A 6/05/09 or B 5/27/09” are urged to return it to any Wegmans for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Jack Donahoe at 502-583-4402 ext 207 or 800-626-5357 ext 207.
